5 Easy Ways to Relax

Five simple ideas to reduce stress at home, the office, or just about anywhere.

The next time you’re feeling overwhelmed with stress remember to take several deep breaths to help you relax. There are plenty of quick, easy ways to de-stress no matter where you are.

Use Your Imagination. When life gets overwhelming, relax and close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine something that makes you happy. It could be anything from a favorite memory to a dream vacation.  The goal is to temporarily take your mind off whatever is stressing you out.

Get Organized. Cluttered environments can increase stress. For example, if your desk is covered in miscellaneous papers, give yourself 5 or 10 minutes to get organized. Completing this kind of visible goal will not only help you relax, but it will help boost your mood and make you feel more prepared to tackle whatever may come your way!

Take Stretch Breaks. This is a particularly good thing to try if you’ve been stationary for hours at your desk or on a long flight. If you’ve been working at a computer all day, try stretching your shoulders, neck, and upper back. You may also want to stand up to try a front thigh/hip/lower back stretch, which involves sitting in your chair and crossing your leg, bending forward at the hip until you feel the stretch, and then holding that position for 15 to 20 seconds to help your muscles relax. Take notice of your posture. Placing a sticky note on your monitor is a great way to remind yourself to take stretch breaks or set a reminder on your calendar or phone.

Aromatherapy. Schedule an appointment for a massage that incorporates aromatherapy (it’s complimentary at Essential Body Wellness). Aromatherapy during a massage can relieve sore muscles as well as reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Do Nothing. Yes – take 5 minutes to do absolutely nothing. Think about the last time you went 5 minutes without doing anything (not checking Facebook, looking at your phone, watching TV). For some people it is challenging to take short breaks. If you’re having a challenging day, try taking 5 minutes to look out the nearest window to take a break from your monitor or just close your eyes.

Massage therapists do not diagnose medical conditions nor is this information intended to replace medical counsel. It is always advised to consult your physician first when you are seeking pain relief as there are many conditions with similar symptoms and some of them are life threatening and require medical attention.
